Levi with children: which bookings work with small legs, and which do not

Every experienced parent works this out on day two, and it is better to know it on day nought. Winter clothing does its job while a body is producing heat. A child walking, sliding, climbing into a sleigh or reaching out to a reindeer is producing plenty. A child standing in a field at night, being told to be patient because something might happen in the sky, is producing almost none, and no amount of equipment fully fixes that.

So the good family listings share three traits. They are short, they happen in daylight, and something is going on the whole time. $129 is the clearest example: ninety minutes in which the animals are met, fed and talked about, with one kilometre of sleigh inside it. There is no waiting in it anywhere, and 504 people have left reviews, more than any other reindeer listing here.

And the hard ones share the opposite. The long evening outings on this site run three hours and more, in the dark, with time spent standing outside while a guide watches the cloud. For adults that is the whole appeal. For a six-year-old it is a long time to be asked to be still and hopeful, and it is not made better by the booking having been expensive. If the sky is the reason you came, book it for an evening when one adult stays behind, or accept that you may turn back early.

One honest caveat. Nobody on this site — not us, not the operators — can tell you whether the sky will do anything on a given night. That is true for adults and children alike, and it is precisely why we do not suggest spending a child’s only good evening of the week finding out.

If a family has one morning and one booking, we would spend it on reindeer, and the reason is not that they are gentle. It is that the whole hour happens at a child’s scale.

$101, one hour. A traditional sleigh, a walking animal, a forest. Everyone is sitting down and wrapped up, the pace is roughly the pace you would walk at, and there is nothing to absorb before it can begin. For a three- or four-year-old that is close to ideal, and it is also the lowest animal fare on this site.

$129, ninety minutes. The version with the farm in it: you meet the reindeer, you feed them, you hear the people who keep them, and the sleigh ride is one kilometre inside that. The rating is 4.1, which is the lowest of the animal listings, and the reason is visible in the description — adults who booked it expecting a long ride found a short one. Children who booked it to feed a reindeer found exactly what they came for. Read the listing and you will be in the right group. It also says pickup available, which with small children is not a small detail.

Then the dogs, for children old enough to sit still in a moving basket. $172 is a five-kilometre ride, two hours, the best rated animal listing on this site at 4.8. $171 puts a husky sled and a reindeer sleigh into the same two hours and says plainly that no driving is asked of anybody. Whether a particular child may ride, and with whom, is set by the operator and written on the listing page — check it rather than guessing, because the answer is not the same on every listing.

This is a page about which things work, so it should be equally clear about which do not. None of these are bad listings. They are simply not built around six-year-old legs.

The long evening outings. The night trips on this site run from two and a half hours up to five and a half. They involve driving out of the village to get away from its lights, then waiting, then possibly driving somewhere else because the cloud moved. That is a good evening for an adult and a long one for a child, and the part that makes it good — patience, darkness, silence — is the part children are least equipped for.

The five-hour machine day. $240 is the best rated thing on this site at 4.9, and it is five hours long with fishing in the middle of it. Teenagers often love it. Small children are being asked to sit quietly beside a hole in the ice, which is the single least likely thing they will agree to do.

The driving listings. The self-drive husky and snowmobile listings put a vehicle or a team under somebody’s control, and the operator decides who that somebody may be. If your children are old enough, some of them are marvellous. If they are not, the passenger versions exist for exactly this reason: $172 and $171 both put children in the sled without anyone having to steer it.

The shape of a good family week here, then, is simple: mornings with animals or ice, afternoons indoors while the light goes, and the night-time things saved for the adults who actually want to stand in a dark field.
